if you were on a plane and it crashed on an island out in the Canadian wilderness? There is this book called the Hatchet...by Gary Paulsen. And then the whole 5 book series Brian's Saga
I read the Hatchet and I have a copy of The River the second in the series on AudioBook..I didn't even know there had been 3 more follow ups. I have not been doing much reading the past 10 years to be honest.
The hatchet is briefly, a story of a young boy who gets trapped in the wilderness when the plane he is on crashes and he lives but the pilot is killed. He has only his clothing and a Hatchet his mother gave him before he left to go see his father. It is a wonderful story of survival and how he goes about accomplishing that.
I think the very first thing to get busy on is Shelter..he happens to be close to water so that part is a given..but what if you're on an Island surround by salt water? You really have to think yourself out of that kind of situation. And in his case predators are a factor. When's the last time you thought you may be eaten by a predator??? I think that is what attracts me to camping. NOT being eaten by a predator, but the act of surviving. I love to camp but sleeping on the ground not so much...I've done it many times..but I was so happy when I found a van I could afford and now when I camp it's in the cocoon of my van. Im still not 100% safe the only predator I really worry about is the 2 legged kind! I have had some issues with raccoon when I've been camped. They did not attack me but MY Supplies they did try to get at. I have a machete...maybe I will start carrying that. IT's dull tho I must sharpen it up.

So the kid has a hatchet..I have one that my sis gave me but I never take it camping...I use it to split wood here on my little homestead..and I've abused it to the point I need a new one. It's been a good one..So if you were on an island you would still need to build a shelter. It could be made up of deadwood and palm fronds, anything you can find at hand. If there is no fresh water stream, then rain water would be the only chance you have for water unless you have some plastic to create a passive solar droplet system.
I don't know why I began to think about this today except I was thinking earlier of the movie with Tom Hanks..Cast Away...very good movie. His whole life was about survival once he realized he was stuck there...and once he secured that then his mind is all he had to create a life beyond just surviving. I think the reason I'm even on this train of thought is because if you take away all we have accumulated in life, that is where we are! Stripped down of our worldly goods we are back to "square one".
Apparently we need a SHARP object to survive..the Natives made their sharp objects out of stone. Hmmmm.
I follow a Youtuber called I Like Mike. He is walking across America! I wanted to do that when I was younger, but then I got married instead. So last year Mike walked across from CA to DE on the American Discovery Trail...this year his plans almost got put off but he was able to make it happen and he is walking from Isle Royal National Park, to the Florida Keys! He started about 5 weeks ago and his journey is Part survival and part Modern Day Man.
Once a week or when ever he needs to he gets a motel or stays with people who offer a place and catches up on bathing, sleeping in a bed etc. But most of the time he sleeps out on the ground in his mummy bag! Sometimes he gets an offer to sleep on a church stoop or in some picnic shelter, he depends on the kindness of strangers a lot. Currently he is in Wolf Country! Yes the UP of Michigan has a population of 600-700 Wolf I looked it up after he found a track!
Very interesting...he used to sell Real Estate in California...I don't know why he decided to do these long walks...I really really really would love to be doing that. You should check him out and subscribe cause it's a continuing Saga of his walk he posts weekly normally on a Saturday.
Have you read Into the Wild? Another book of survival with a bit of a not so good outcome...I recently read they had air lifted the BUS out of the woods because so many people were going out there and having to be rescued and 2 drowned trying to cross the river..so it's gone. I think they may eventually put it somewhere so it can be a memorial or something that seems only fitting.

So you can have shelter and still die! Chris McCandless made a lot of mistakes...as we all do along our journey of life. Some of the choices we make shorten our journey, sometimes our journey is shortened by the choices made by others..

So in the news...now it seems the illustrious Post Master General has been doing some illegal campaign money scheme. Putting pressure on former employees to donate money to the GOP and he reimbursed them with bonuses..It's call a Straw Donor Scheme! I don't doubt it at all since everyone who Trump placed in his cabinet are Campaign CROOKS...Trump has so many slime balls around him that is why he is so pale..covered in Slime.
The new book, Disloyal, just out from Trumps x Lawyer Micheal Cohen says he thinks Trump will resign if he loses, so Pence can Pardon him for all the crimes he will be accused of once he is out of office! That would not surprise me at all!!

Mostly now the Covid eye is focused on kids returning to school they started here this week...so far over 200 kids have the virus, and on the U of SC campus there's like 1,800 sick kids since Aug 1st now 650 current cases. They have a quarantine unit..so they are not going back home to spread it which I think is sensible.
So we'll see how it goes...and I saw most people feel the way I do about the vaccine. 23% said they would not take it, 53% said they don't trust it, So I'm not the only one who thinks a vaccine is not gonna save us.
The lawn mower blades arrived these are wider than the originals but I guess that doesn't matter? I will find out when I put them on...Very humid again here as rain has pushed it'self in from the Southeastern Atlantic where some storms are a-brewing!! They are almost thru the whole Alphabet, to name storms we've had so many this year...next it will be Greek Alphabet! Alpha, Beta, Chi...
